GERD – Gastroesophageal reflux disease
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition in which stomach acid or other stomach contents regularly leak back into the esophagus. This reflux can damage the lining of the esophagus and cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms.
GERD is usually diagnosed based on patient history and symptoms. Various examinations such as endoscopy, manometry or esophageal pH testing can be used to verify the diagnosis.
Causes
- Weak lower esophageal sphincter
- Excessive production of stomach acid
- Overweight or obesity
- Smoking
Symptoms
- Heartburn
- Regurgitation (return of food back into the mouth)
- Pain in the chest
- Chronic cough
- Swallowing problems
