Degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis)
Degenerative joint disease, also known as osteoarthritis or OS, is a chronic disease affecting the joints. This condition leads to wear and tear of the cartilage which protects the ends of the bones in the joints.
The diagnosis of degenerative joint disease begins with a physical examination and a patient history check. X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is often used to confirm the diagnosis.
Causes
Degenerative joint disease can be caused by a variety of factors including old age, being overweight, genetic predisposition and joint overload caused by frequent movement or sports activity.
Symptoms
- Pain in the joints
- Limited range of motion
- Joint stiffness, especially after long periods of inactivity
- Cracking or crunching sound when moving
