Headaches including migraines
Headaches and migraines are common ailments which affect a large part of the population. While headaches can take many forms and intensities, migraines are a specific type of headache characterised by severe, throbbing pain usually on one side of the head.
Diagnosis of headaches and migraines is usually carried out based on a detailed medical examination and the patient's medical history. Additional tests such as MRI or CT scans may be performed if migraines are suspected.
Causes
- Stress
- Lack of sleep
- Hormonal changes
- External stimuli such as light or sound
Symptoms
- Severe, throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Changes in vision (known as "aura")
