Locked jaw
Locked jaw is a condition in which there is limited movement in the area of the jaw joint. This can lead to discomfort in the jaw, face and sometimes neck. The condition can be temporary or chronic and is often associated with pain when chewing, opening the mouth or speaking.
Diagnosis usually begins with a thorough medical examination and patient history. The doctor may also request X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging or a computed tomography (CT) scan for a more detailed analysis.
Causes
- Injuries to the jaw or face
- Stress and addictive behaviors such as grinding the teeth
- Arthritic changes in the jaw joint
- Incorrect position of the teeth
Symptoms
- Limited jaw movement
- Pain in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles
- Clicking or popping when moving the jaw
- Difficulty chewing or speaking
