Bechterew's disease (Ankylosing spondylitis)
As with arthritis this is a chronic inflammatory disease which, unlike rheumatism, affects the spine. The main symptom of Bechterew's disease is back pain, especially in the sacral region, from where it can radiate to the lower limbs and buttocks. This pain tends to be most intense in the second half of the night or in the morning. However, the disease can also affect the shoulder or hip joints. This disease mostly affects young people aged 25-30, and even in these cases its cause is not clear.
However, thanks to advances in medicine, there are very effective substances through which AS patients can be helped much more effectively than before. Biological treatment can even stop the disease in some patients.
The disease cannot be prevented and, as with arthritis, regular rehabilitation and lifestyle modification are important.
If you have back pain, do not delay and visit the doctor to get yourself properly examined.
